Just like humans, dogs need to drink water every day. Water is an important part of the nutritional composition of dogs, and if the dog lacks water up to 20%, it will be life-threatening. In general, adult dogs need about 100 ml of water per kilogram of body weight per day, and puppies need 150 ml of water per kilogram of body weight per day. In summer, pets should increase the dog’s diet appropriately to avoid dehydration.
Do not drink water for dogs:
- Not changing the water for a long time Now many pet owners will buy a drinking fountain for the dog. Fill the drinking fountain and leave it alone until the dog drinks all the water in the drinking fountain before changing it. This is actually a wrong approach, because the water that has been left for so long will breed bacteria and microorganisms, especially in summer, which is not good for the health of dogs.
- Too hot or too cold water First of all, hot water will scald humans, not to mention dogs, right? And if the water is too cold, the dog’s stomach itself is more fragile than humans, and it is easy to vomit and diarrhea after drinking it, so it is best to give the dog a cold drink. In addition, if your dog’s stomach is often uncomfortable, you can feed it some probiotics to regulate it and strengthen its resistance.
- Drink pure water for dogs Some pet owners think that pure water is good for the human body, and it should be good for dogs, so they drink pure water for dogs. This is actually wrong, because pure water filters out many essential minerals for the dog’s body, which is not good for the dog’s health, so don’t give the dog pure water.
- Drink water directly after exercise. Dogs, like us, should not drink water directly after exercise. Because drinking a lot of water immediately after strenuous exercise will increase the excretion of sweat, cause more salt loss, and increase the amount of blood circulation, thereby increasing the burden on the heart. Therefore, it is not advisable to give your dog water immediately after strenuous exercise.
Precautions:
- If the dog does not like to drink water, the pet owner can add water to the dog food for feeding.
- Pinch the skin on the dog’s neck, and then check its rebound response. If it rebounds quickly, it means drinking enough water.
- Check to see if the dog’s gums are moist.
- Dogs who drink too much water may vomit and want to sleep.
