What is a Black and Tan Coonhound? What does a black and tan coonhound look like?

What is a Black and Tan Coonhound?

The black-and-tan coonhound is the result of a cross between a bloodhound and a foxhound, the famous coonhound that howls when it drives its prey up a tree. It has also been successfully used for hunting bears, deer, possums and mountain lions in difficult terrain. It can endure the cold of harsh winters and the scorching heat of summer. Although usually mild-mannered, it becomes a tenacious stalker when it smells its prey.

What does a black and tan coonhound look like?

The head is neat and wrinkled. The expression is alert, friendly and warm. The nostrils are open and the nose mirror is black. The drooping upper lip is well developed, showing a typical hunting dog appearance. The eyes are chestnut brown to dark brown and round. Ears are set low and set back, long and drooping. The entire outline of the head is oval. The neck is muscular, sloping and of medium length. No fat in the throat. The back is level, powerful and strong. There are full, well-arched, well-supported ribs. Deep chest. The tail is strong and lifted freely. The shoulder structure is very powerful. The forelegs are straight, the hindquarters powerful, the toes strong and well-arched, and the pads thick and firm. The coat is short, dense and smooth. The color is mostly black, with 10-15% brown markings. Brown markings generally appear above the eyes, on the sides of the muzzle, on the chest, legs, under the tail, and on the feet.

Habits of the Black and Tan Coonhound

The reason why the Black and Tan Coonhound is considered a working dog is that he is very energetic, vigilant, and friendly to people. Although he is usually mild-mannered, he becomes a tenacious stalker when he smells his prey.
It howls when it drives its prey up a tree. It has also been successfully used for hunting bears, deer, possums and mountain lions in difficult terrain. It can endure the cold of harsh winters and the scorching heat of summer. They are also known as “catch up tree” hounds because they often chase raccoons up trees. Hunters identify and identify them by their distinct barks. Relying entirely on his sense of smell to perform his tasks, his very powerful, rhythmic stride gives him great speed.
Peaceful temperament, likes to go out, and friendly. As a hunting dog that works by its sense of smell, it should be able to cooperate closely with other hunting dogs, allowing for reservations, but never shy or fierce. Attacking humans or other dogs is a flaw. Note: Since he is a hunting dog, the scar is a sign of honor, not a defect.

Black and Tan Coonhound Breeding

Black and Tan Coonhounds are picky about food only in summer, and only some dogs, so what should be paid attention to when feeding Black and Tan Coonhounds in hot summer?
In summer, the dog’s feed is prone to spoilage, especially high-protein feed such as meat. Therefore, attention should be paid to preventing food poisoning. The feed should be fresh food that has been heated and cooled, and the amount of feeding should be appropriately reduced in consideration of the decrease in dog feed intake in summer. Never feed your dog moldy and spoiled food. If the dog develops vomiting, diarrhea, and general weakness shortly after eating, it should be treated in time. There are three more points:
1. It is normal for dogs to eat less in summer than in other seasons. Therefore, you can prepare less food for the dog appropriately, so that it takes a long time to prepare it, and it can’t eat a few bites, and then throw it away worrying that the food will go bad. Dog food is not cheap, it is a little bit less wasteful.
2. Use some icy and delicious mixed dog food. For example, yogurt, cheese, wonderful fresh buns, etc. can be frozen in the refrigerator, and then the food tastes very good, mixed with dog food, you can let the dog eat more cold food.
3. Appropriately give the dog some cold drinks. A small pudding can be eaten quickly. If you have just taken your dog out for a walk, give him a popsicle when he is lying on the ground and panting after returning home, which can help him lower the temperature in his body faster, which is good for the dog. But don’t eat too much, be careful of stomach upset. For smaller dogs, a popsicle is best eaten in several portions. Ice water is also good. You can give it some ice water to drink after taking your dog home. It is also good for lowering your dog’s body temperature.
