What is black neon tetra?
Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi (scientific name: Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi), commonly known as black neon fish, black lotus lamp, black different pattern carp and so on. Its small size, red semicircles at the top of the eyes, and black and white stripes on the sides of the body are its distinguishing features. Grows in vegetated streams and swamps. In the wild it usually feeds on aquatic insect larvae, plant debris, etc. Widely distributed in the Paraguay River Basin in South America.
Active in captivity, it is a suitable choice in most polyculture tanks. But it is not recommended to mix them with large, aggressive fish, otherwise they will be vulnerable or preyed on. They are also a kind of gregarious fish, at least 6 or more gathered together.
What does a black neon tetra look like?
The whole body is silver, and two adjacent conspicuous horizontal stripes are close to the sides of the body, one is a conspicuous black stripe; the other is a smaller white stripe. The upper part of the eye is also decorated with a semicircle of red and yellow. In the natural environment, due to the decay of organic matter in the riverbed and the decomposition of fallen leaves, a large amount of tannins are released, which makes the water more acidic, and their appearance becomes dark brown.
It may seem tricky to distinguish their gender, but they can be distinguished by their size. Females are plumper than males, especially when the female is full of eggs.

Feed once or twice a day for no more than three minutes at a time.
