What is a lurcher?
A lurcher is a crossbreed dog created by crossing a greyhound or other sight hound with another type of dog (usually a collie or terrier). Poachers have been closely associated with poaching for hundreds of years. In modern times it is bred as a hunting or companion dog.
What does a lurcher look like?
Lurcers have many greyhound characteristics. They are very affectionate and love human company. They are also very, very intelligent – like German Shepherds and Border Collies, Lurchers were used as messenger dogs in both world wars.
Lurchers have recently become very popular pets, which is great news for all of us involved in the Lurcher Rescue! There are many reasons for this, including…
Lurcers come in all shapes and sizes, from small Whippets to large Deerhounds and everything in between. Their personalities will depend on their specific “cross”.
Lurcers can have many different coat types and are available in a variety of colors.
With their gorgeously elegant noses and long, light bodies, they exude sophistication and glamour.
lurcher living habits
The lurcher is a crossbreed, usually between sighthound and working dog breeds. Generally, the purpose of the cross is to breed a smarter hunting dog, a shrewd animal suitable for poaching rabbits, hares, and hunting birds. Over time, poachers and hunters found that the cross of certain breeds with sight hounds produced a dog better suited for this purpose, as this hound combines speed and intelligence.
lurcher rearing
Easy-going but aloof, Lurcher is best when socialized early. Part of Lurcher’s sighthound DNA equates to independent thinking and a desire to learn.
Trained Lurcers are generally polite, but if left unattended, they may still seize the opportunity to sneak some food. (Maybe it’s a more serious effect? Or just dogs being dogs.) They’re usually fine with most kids, but keep in mind that every dog is an individual. Interactions with children should be supervised until familiarity and trust are established. Children should be taught how to properly touch and touch any dog.
