In a cheerful gathering, a multitude of pet enthusiasts congregated on Egypt’s Mediterranean North Coast in the Matrouh Governorate for their annual pet carnival on August 20th.
Known as “Aleef,” this pet carnival is traditionally hosted in Egypt’s capital, Cairo. As the largest event of its kind in the country, it serves as a platform for pet lovers and owners to engage with experts in pet care, breeding, and nutrition.
Nadine Hamdy, the carnival’s marketing manager, expressed, “For 12 years, we’ve been organizing this event, but this marks the first occasion of hosting it on the North Coast, which is a definite enhancement for us.”
The carnival, which took place on a Saturday, witnessed participation from numerous veterinarians, pet nutritionists, and pet trainers. The day’s activities encompassed pet medical demonstrations and training sessions, along with various recreational undertakings such as swimming lessons and exhibitions.
Hamdy believes that such events foster a deeper connection between people and animals.
Adam Kilani, a visitor hailing from the nearby Alexandria Governorate, described the event as an unforgettable experience. His five-year-old canine companion, Gawaher, triumphantly swam for the first time in a year, marking a milestone moment for them both. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for me to learn about pet care in an enjoyable manner,” Kilani remarked while observing Gawaher’s aquatic feat.
Kilani emphasized the significance of staging such events, particularly in tourist destinations during the summer months, in bolstering the culture of responsible pet ownership in Egypt. He noted, “I’ve encountered individuals here who had never interacted with a dog before, yet they enthusiastically played with Gawaher. Some expressed their desire to soon have a dog as part of their household.”
Lina Kamal, accompanied by her three-year-old canine companion, stressed the importance of the event in addressing the issue of stray animals and offering potential solutions to their predicament. “We must cultivate heightened awareness to safeguard animals… this is a key principle advocated by the carnival,” Kamal asserted.
