An ongoing New South Wales parliamentary investigation into workforce shortages within the veterinary field has unveiled a distressing mental health crisis fueled by workload pressures and client mistreatment.
Garry Putland, whose daughter Sophie Putland tragically took her own life in 2021 at the age of 33, shared his concerns about the alarming mental health statistics plaguing the veterinary profession. He stressed that such statistics would be deemed unacceptable in other healthcare sectors.
The inquiry disclosed that veterinarians face a suicide rate four times higher than that of the general population. On average, a veterinarian loses their life to suicide every 12 weeks. The disheartening numbers underscore a dire situation that demands immediate attention.
The root of the issue, Putland stated, lies in the unrealistic expectations harbored by pet owners regarding healthcare expenses for animals. He emphasized the need for improved education to clarify the actual costs associated with owning a pet.
The misunderstanding arises from the assumption that animal healthcare should mirror human healthcare, which is often free or subsidized by Medicare. In reality, the veterinary industry lacks such subsidies, making the costs borne by clients a genuine reflection of service expenses.
Addressing this concern, Putland highlighted the importance of transparent pricing within the industry and the need to foster realistic expectations among clients regarding the genuine costs of veterinary services.
To combat the distressing state of affairs, Putland established Sophie’s Legacy—a venture dedicated to enhancing the safety of the veterinary industry and curbing client abuse. The organization introduced a national educational campaign named “We’re Only Human,” which urges animal owners to commit to treating veterinary staff with kindness, respect, and an understanding of the immense pressures they face.
Putland called upon the government to allocate funds for proactive mental healthcare services to ensure that veterinary personnel receive the necessary support.
Caroline Winter, a journalist who initiated a podcast to shed light on the grave mental health challenges faced by veterinarians, emphasized the critical role of updated research in comprehending the full scope of the crisis in Australia.
Winter emphasized that pet owners must grasp the responsibilities that come with owning an animal. She underscored the privilege of animal ownership over a sense of entitlement and emphasized the pivotal role of education in fostering this understanding.
