Chance, a rescue dog, is making a significant impact as the first therapy dog at Shriners Children’s Lexington hospital in Kentucky. His journey from a dire situation to becoming a certified therapy dog is truly heartwarming.
Chance’s story began when he was found in a critical condition, starving and with a bullet lodged in his shoulder. Camp Jean Rescue provided him with much-needed medical care and affection, but his injuries were severe. Veterinarians had to amputate his left front leg, collarbone, and shoulder to treat the damage caused by the bullet wound.
Six weeks after his amputation, Chance was rescued by Andrea White, who saw his gentle and intelligent nature and decided to pursue pet therapy certification for him. White, a former nurse at Shriners, had a special focus on visiting patients with limb deficiencies, making Chance a perfect fit for the role.
Chance and White completed therapy pet training through Love on a Leash, and he soon began his work at Shriners Children’s Lexington as a certified therapy dog. During his visits, Chance brings joy to children with limb differences, lighting up their faces and captivating the curiosity of both kids and parents.
Chance’s “eager to please” personality makes him enthusiastic about his work, and he eagerly looks forward to each visit. Families of the children he visits appreciate the compassion and relatability he brings to the situation, helping both children and parents cope with the challenges of limb differences.
Hospital employees also recognize the positive impact Chance has on patients’ experiences. His presence helps alleviate anxiety and stress during lengthy visits to the prosthetics clinic, providing something to look forward to for patients and their families.
When Chance is not working, he enjoys spending time with his adoptive family and his rescue dog sibling, Sadie. White hopes that Chance’s story inspires others to support therapy dog programs in various settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, schools, airports, libraries, and more.
Chance’s journey from a rescue dog with a traumatic past to a certified therapy dog is a testament to the power of resilience, love, and compassion in making a difference in the lives of others.
