Stephanie Reed went to great lengths to recover her stolen dog, Klaus, in Washington, D.C. on Labor Day. After 12 years together, Klaus is her cherished rescue pet, making his theft a heartbreaking ordeal.
When Reed emerged from a store on 14th Street NW, she discovered Klaus missing from where she had left him. Determined to reclaim her beloved companion, she filed a police report and distributed flyers throughout the neighborhood, hoping for any lead.
Her breakthrough occurred in Franklin Square when a worker from the DowntownDC Business Improvement District (BID) spotted Klaus boarding a Circulator bus with two young men. The worker urgently contacted Reed, providing information about the bus’s location and route.
Reed wasted no time, driving several blocks to intercept the bus near 14th and U. She successfully flagged down the driver, and as the bus came to a halt, the two men holding Klaus exited. Reed confronted them, exclaiming, “You stole my dog!” She swiftly retrieved Klaus, albeit leaving the leash behind, and made her escape.
Klaus appeared unharmed, and Reed now views the entire episode as a rather comical movie plot. She expressed gratitude for the support received from well-wishers and the helpful supervisor at Franklin Park, although the Downtown BID declined to comment on the incident.
