The trailer, which can be viewed above or via the embedded link below, offers a tantalizing glimpse into the eerie world of “Pet Sematary: Bloodlines.”
Unearthing the Past: “Pet Sematary: Bloodlines” Synopsis
In a bold departure from the familiar, “Pet Sematary: Bloodlines” transports viewers back to the year 1969, where we follow the young Jud Crandall, portrayed by Jackson White. Jud’s journey is at the heart of this prequel as he confronts the malevolent forces that lurk in the shadows of his hometown, Ludlow, Maine. These sinister forces will resurface years later when Jud has aged into the character we know from the original 1989 film and its 2019 remake.
The ensemble cast includes notable actors such as Forrest Goodluck, Jack Mulhern, Henry Thomas, Natalie Alyn Lind, Isabella Star LaBlanc, Pam Grier, and David Duchovny. “Pet Sematary: Bloodlines” marks the directorial debut of Lindsey Anderson Beer, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jeff Buhler.
Lindsey Anderson Beer on the Uncharted Territory of “Pet Sematary: Bloodlines”
In an exclusive email interview with IGN, director Lindsey Anderson Beer shared her insights into the film’s development and the importance of exploring the early life of Jud Crandall. She addressed the challenge of creating a prequel and how it offers fresh perspectives on well-known characters.
Beer explained, “For me, Jud Crandall, played first brilliantly by Fred Gwynne and then John Lithgow, steals the show in both movie adaptations. There was a big question mark in his actions that I felt as a fan I wanted answered.”
She continued, “Making a prequel allowed me to do not just Jud’s origin story but Ludlow’s origin story, and show how the burden of this evil affects every townsperson. Something just doesn’t add up about Ludlow, and its history.”
Beer also discussed her approach to expanding upon Stephen King’s lore, saying, “So much was expanded upon that King briefly writes in the original text. The story of Timmy Baterman only occupies a few pages of the book, so there was a lot to flesh out to bring his journey to life and undeath.”
Intriguingly, Beer’s vision extends beyond the known narrative, as she aimed to provide answers to questions fans have long pondered. “I wanted fans to feel, like Jud, that they had been lied to. The stories we were told before were cover-ups or superstitions.”
“Pet Sematary: Bloodlines” not only explores the origin of the Pet Sematary itself but also uncovers the hidden layers of Ludlow’s history. Beer’s commitment to challenging traditional horror tropes and creating a unique cinematic experience shines through in this prequel.
Don’t miss the premiere of “Pet Sematary: Bloodlines” on Paramount+ on October 6, 2023, as it promises to deliver a thrilling and unpredictable journey into the heart of terror. Keep an eye out for nods to Stephen King’s wider universe throughout the film, as Beer pays homage to the iconic author who inspired her.
