Ring, an Amazon-owned company, has launched a Pet Tag priced at $9.99 to aid in the recovery of lost pets. This Pet Tag incorporates a QR code on your pet’s collar, which is linked to a mobile app. In the event that your pet goes missing, anyone can scan the QR code to facilitate the reunion of the lost pet with its owner.
The QR code is associated with a pet profile that can include essential information, such as health conditions, and notably, an optional “contact me” feature that initiates two-way communication with the pet owner. Unlike regular collar tags that typically display a phone number and other personal details, this QR code keeps your personal information, including your phone number and ZIP code, private.
When the QR code is scanned, the owner receives a push notification, and the pet’s profile is displayed to the person who found the pet. The pet profile can include up to five photos, the pet’s name, breed, weight, color, unique markers, health conditions, medication details, and microchip numbers. Ring has also partnered with Petco Love Lost to integrate a network of over 2,500 animal shelters in the US into the Ring app.
It’s important to note that Ring’s Pet Tag does not offer any tracking or wireless capabilities. It solely relies on the QR code, lacking GPS or Amazon Sidewalk integration. It differs significantly from using an Apple AirTag to track your pet. Additionally, the Pet Tag prominently features the Ring logo and the “always home” tagline, effectively turning your pet into a walking Ring advertisement.
