A dog in Summit was attacked by what is believed to be a coyote on Sunday, and Summit police are reminding residents what to do if they encounter a wild animal.
Officials say coyotes are generally not confrontational and are looking for an easy food source. That doesn’t mean they won’t become aggressive, they said.
“Coyote attacks are not common in Summit. It’s very rare,” said Summit Police Lt. Charles Daly.
A dog was bitten by a wild animal in the area of Dale Avenue Sunday night, authorities said.
Police tell us they are not sure if it was a coyote or a fox, but it is a wild animal.
“We all have to be careful with our dogs, even if you have kids. You have to keep an eye on them. I know it causes a lot of panic when there are bears around. But that’s typical of this area,” said Renee Napoli, a Owner of a 5 month old puppy.
Dogs smaller than 40 pounds are typically considered prey by coyotes, while larger dogs may be viewed as threats or competitors, according to officials.
It is understood the dog injured in the attack is expected to make a full recovery.
