BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Candy is a great treat, but not for everyone in the house. To make sure you have a safe Halloween, make sure you’re keeping your candy locked up.
News 40 spoke to a vet today at All Cats & Dogs Veterinary Hospital, Dr. Johnson said a good rule of thumb is to just keep candy out of sight.
“Candy can cause a lot of GI issues, chocolate toxicity… Artificial sweeteners, a lot of the sugar-free candy has Xylitol, which is poisonous for our pets.”, Dr. Johnson said in her interview.
According to the practitioner, the best practice would be to put your candy up somewhere high in the case of dogs or in a cupboard or Tupperware for cats.
Johnson said if you’re ever concerned, you can call your local vet or utilize the 24/7 animal poison control phone number.
