Port Macquarie Animal Shelter invites the community to celebrate its third anniversary with its first ever Open Day on Saturday, November 4 from 10am to 12pm. It will be held at 27 John Fraser Place, in the front parking lot.
The event will feature guided tours every half hour where interested pet owners can view the animals available for adoption. Port Macquarie Hastings Council rangers will be on hand to educate the community about their work and promote responsible pet ownership.
Local community groups will also be on hand to provide free information sessions including early intervention, basic training and koala avoidance demonstrations.
There will be free face painting, giveaways and lucky door prizes, as well as stalls from local businesses offering a one-stop-shop for pet supplies and services.
The open house is a unique opportunity for members of the community to learn more about the process from ranger intake and in-shelter care to reunification or adoption.
Between 60 and 80 animals are taken in each month, of which approximately 60 percent are surrendered or abandoned. The remaining 40% are successfully reunited with their owners.
In June of this year, the shelter celebrated its 1000th adoption.
