A popular dog food brand has been forced to apologize and recall its products after Australian dog owners discovered mold in the pet food.
Three different flavors of Meals for Mutts dog food are affected – 12 products in total. The pet food is commonly sold by retailers including Pet Circle, Pet Stock and My Pet Warehouse.
Meals for Mutts said it had been notified of the issue and apologized “for any inconvenience or concern caused,” advising pet owners to immediately stop feeding their dog any products in the affected bags. It also offered customers the opportunity to return affected bags to the place of purchase, but there has been no confirmation of what to expect once they return to the store. The affected products and their sell-by dates are listed below.
Horrified’ Labrador owner discovers mold in dog’s food
A dog owner shared pictures of mold in her recently purchased Meals for Mutts food and warned others to be vigilant.
“Horrified to have discovered mold in this batch of adult salmon and sardine food,” she wrote online. “Disappointing to say the least.”
Mold on food can produce toxins that affect a dog’s nervous system, and symptoms can be severe. Most dogs require immediate veterinary attention to combat symptoms such as hypersalivation, seizures and overheating, with most patients requiring hospitalization, according to Dogs Australia. Dogs have also been known to die after ingesting mold.
