FORT WAYNE, Ind.(WPTA) – Governor Holcomb has proclaimed November 5-12 as Adopt a Hoosier Shelter Pet Week.
The purpose of the proclamation is to raise awareness of the growing problem of pet homelessness and the crisis facing shelters and rescues.
Officials say there are a large number of animals in the shelter and rescue system. As facilities become overwhelmed, healthy pets are being euthanized to make room.
“More than 1,000 animals come through our shelter each month,” said Amy-Jo Sites, director of the Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control Center (FWACC). “With limited resources, we are asking our cities to reach out and help us during this crisis. One way to do that is through adoption.”
Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control will reduce adoption fees the week of Nov. 5-12, officials said.
