Council rangers will be offering free microchipping services for well-behaved dogs in November and December.
The service is part of a responsible pet ownership scheme where rangers provide advice and free microchipping at a pop-up stall in Shoalhaven.
All cats and dogs must be microchipped before they are 12 weeks old or before they are sold or given away, whichever comes first, said Jodie Parnell, acting chief of ranger services.
“Microchipping is more than just a legal requirement, it gives lost, injured or stolen pets the best chance of being reunited with their owners,” Ms Parnell said.
“We know it is sometimes difficult for pet owners to have their dog or cat microchipped, and we provide this service to help pet owners in the community,” she said.
The free microchipping offer does not apply to breeders and there is a limit of two dogs per owner. Dogs must be obedient and accept their owner’s control.
Microchipping of cats will be available at another time, and rangers will be available at drop-in meetings to answer questions about microchipping and neutering cats.
