Animals have the instinct to reproduce offspring. Due to each animal’s own physical reasons, a series of conditions such as abnormal estrus are different. What factors will affect the normal estrus of dogs?
1. Season:
Dogs breed seasonally. Under normal circumstances, female dogs come into heat twice a year, with an interval of about 6 months between each time. Most of the dogs raised alone are in heat in spring and autumn (March-May, September-November); dogs raised in groups are in heat at all stages of the season, and the seasonality is not obvious. In addition, wild dogs in South America and the Arctic Circle are in heat. Breeding dogs also have estrus once a year, and the seasonality is not obvious.
2. Age:
Due to the increase of age, the metabolic function of the aging dog‘s body declines, and the estrus cycle is disordered, which often prolongs the estrus period and shortens the pre-estrus and estrus periods.
3. The first love period:
Generally, the puberty of small dogs comes earlier, and the puberty time is 6-7 months old, and the puberty of large dogs is later at the age of 8-10 months. Dogs in first love have longer pre-estrus and estrus periods. In addition, nutrition and ambient temperature also affect puberty, with higher nutrient levels earlier than lower nutrient levels, and earlier in the tropics than in the frigid or temperate regions.
4. Nutrition:
Due to nutritional deficiencies or excess (obesity), it can also prolong the dog’s estrus period or cause abnormal estrus.
5. Diseases:
Ovarian cyst tumors, pyometra and other reproductive organ diseases often lead to prolonged estrus or no estrus. In addition, there are too many litters in the previous litter, several litters in a row, etc., and the female dog’s body has not been well adjusted and recovered, which will also lead to an excessively long estrus period.
Generally, an elderly dog is advised not to breed her again, as there is a risk of giving birth to an elderly mother. The first estrus is not suitable for breeding, because the various organs of the puppy are immature and the bones are still growing. Dogs with gynecological diseases are recommended to be neutered.
