Montgomery County – Authorities are cautioning pet owners about a recent scam that preys on individuals searching for their lost pets. The scam involves fraudulent individuals claiming to represent the Animal Resource Center (ARC), according to an alert shared on social media by the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center.
In this deceitful scheme, scammers are reaching out to pet owners who have reported missing animals, alleging that they have located the lost pet. The impostors instruct the owners that, in order to proceed with claiming their pet, they must verify a code that will be sent to them.
The ARC has issued a stern warning, urging the public not to fall victim to this scam. Pet owners are advised against engaging with these fraudulent callers and are strongly discouraged from clicking on any links provided by them. Instead, individuals are urged to promptly disconnect the call.
ARC officials emphasize that, in the event a pet is found and taken to the shelter, the legitimate process involves owners physically visiting the shelter to identify and claim their pet. They underscore that, under no circumstances, will the center ask owners to verify their identity solely through a phone call.
“If your dog is lost and ends up at the shelter, we will ALWAYS ask that you first come to the shelter to identify your pet,” stated ARC officials.
Concerned individuals who receive such scam calls are encouraged to contact the Animal Resource Center. This direct line has been provided for reporting and verifying any suspicious activity related to lost pets.
Pet owners are reminded to remain vigilant and report any potential scams to local authorities, ensuring the safety and well-being of both pets and their owners.
