Mornington Peninsula Shire is urging all cat and dog owners to ensure the renewal of their pet registrations by April 10, 2024. Renewal notices will be dispatched shortly, and owners have the option to complete the process online, over the phone, or in person.
The Domestic Animals Act 1994 mandates the microchipping and registration of all cats and dogs over three months old with the Shire. This registration is a fundamental responsibility for pet owners and contributes to the welfare of both pets and the community.
Pet registration fees directly fund various services provided by the Shire, including off-leash dog areas for residents to train and play with their dogs. Additionally, the Community Animal Shelter and Pound care for lost pets and help find new homes for unclaimed cats and dogs.
Community Safety Officers/Rangers respond to dog attacks and nuisance complaints, working to minimize the risk of wandering dogs in townships. The State Government Levy aids in community education on responsible pet ownership.
Registered and microchipped dogs and cats have a higher likelihood of being swiftly reunited with their families if they go missing. Cat registration within Mornington Peninsula Shire requires desexing, unless the cat and owner are members of specific cat organizations.
The annual registration fee is $60.00 for desexed dogs and cats, with discounts available for pension card holders. The current fine for owning an unregistered pet is $385.00, subject to an annual increase by the State Government.
First-time registrations may qualify for free registration if the pet is microchipped and registered within eight weeks of ownership or moving into the municipality. Supporting documentation is required for this application. Animals adopted from the Community Animal Shelter also receive free registration.
Upon payment of registration fees for first-time registrations, pet owners receive a lifetime identification disc to affix to the pet’s collar. Mornington Peninsula Shire emphasizes responsible pet ownership and encourages timely registration to ensure the safety and well-being of all pets in the community.
