LA CONNER — First Street in La Conner came alive on Saturday afternoon as dogs, adorned with daffodils, pranced alongside their owners for the annual Daffodil Pet Parade and Fashion Show.
The parade, which spanned from La Conner Marina to Maple Hall, featured participants like Jane Mitchell and her dogs, Dorothy and Chip, both adorned with cheerful daffodils. Chip’s brother Finn, accompanied by owner Ernie Gomez, joined the floral festivities as well.
Yaretzi Castrejon and Allana Gomez took a poignant approach, displaying a poster featuring pets from the community that have passed away. Castrejon explained that the poster aimed to honor the memory of those beloved pets that could no longer participate in the lively parade.
Cynthia Wood, accompanied by her dog Ruby, expressed enthusiasm for the event, highlighting its positive impact on the local community. This marked Wood’s second year participating in the parade.
Following the lively procession, participants and their furry companions braved a brisk wind to showcase their creativity in the daffodil costume contest. Mark Hulst, La Conner Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, described the event as a joyful gathering for everyone to enjoy.
The Daffodil Pet Parade and Fashion Show is a highlight of the La Conner Daffodil Festival, offering a range of activities for both tourists and locals. Hulst mentioned that the La Conner Visitor Information Center has been receiving inquiries from individuals spanning from British Columbia to south of Seattle, all eager to partake in the festival’s activities.
As spring fever grips the region, Saturday’s festivities were just a prelude to upcoming events. The Tweed Bike Ride, celebrating the arrival of spring near the daffodil fields, is set to take place, starting and ending at the La Conner Swinomish Library, with proceeds benefiting the library foundation.
On March 23, the second annual La Conner Murder Mystery event, titled “The Case of the Bumped-Off Bootlegger,” promises intrigue and entertainment for festival-goers.
La Conner Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Mark Hulst expressed his delight in interacting with visitors from outside the county, assisting them in finding enjoyable activities during their stay. Adding to the festival’s appeal this year, Tulip Valley Farms has introduced U-pick daffodils, allowing visitors to stroll through the vibrant blooms akin to the popular tulip fields.
