In a bid to enhance the lives of shelter dogs and bolster adoption rates, Maricopa County Animal Care and Control (MCACC) has introduced a groundbreaking program dubbed “Tails Around Town.” This initiative allows local residents to take shelter dogs on excursions outside the confines of the shelter.
Enthusiastic participants keen on joining the program are required to complete a sign-up form via the county’s official website and schedule a time to collect their assigned canine companion. Each designated “tailwagger” receives a backpack equipped with essential supplies for the outing, while the dog sports an eye-catching “adopt me” vest alongside a leash.
The inaugural launch of the program has already yielded heartwarming results, with at least one fortunate dog finding their forever home after capturing the attention of a potential adopter during their excursion, as reported by MCACC.
Designed to offer respite from shelter life and to expand the prospects of adoption, “Tails Around Town” encourages participants to accompany their four-legged friends on a variety of adventures. Whether it’s a scenic hike, a leisurely stroll in the park, a visit to a dog-friendly establishment, or simply sharing some quality downtime at home, the possibilities are boundless. Program organizers emphasize that these outings provide invaluable insights into each dog’s personality and preferences, thereby aiding in matchmaking efforts.
Presently, the program operates Thursdays through Saturdays at the west shelter, with dogs required to be returned thirty minutes prior to closing time. While appointment slots are limited, plans are underway to expand availability upon the opening of the new facility at the east shelter slated for May.
“Tails Around Town” represents a commendable initiative aimed at enriching the lives of shelter dogs while fostering meaningful connections with potential adopters within the community.
