As the snow begins to melt away and the spring weather emerges, a gentle reminder is issued to all pet owners: please ensure to clean up after your dogs.
Several concerned residents have taken to social media platforms like Facebook to express their dismay over the prevalence of pet feces scattered across the city, left unattended during the winter months. It’s essential to note that failure to adhere to this responsibility can result in significant fines.
Maury Karch, the Coordinator of Municipal Enforcement at the city of Airdrie, shed light on the reason behind the surge in pet waste sightings during this time of the year.
“With the winter weather conditions and accumulated snow, if a handful of park visitors neglect to pick up after their dogs, the consequences become evident come springtime,” Karch remarked.
Being a dog owner himself, Karch emphasized the importance of demonstrating courtesy towards fellow residents. He shared that he often takes the initiative to clean up any feces left behind, ensuring the area remains pleasant for all dogs and their owners. In instances where one observes someone neglecting their cleanup duty, Karch suggests politely reminding them to do so. Offering an extra doggy bag can serve as a helpful gesture if they are without one.
According to Karch, individuals failing to comply with cleanup regulations may face fines up to $250, provided that the complainant can identify the offender and is willing to testify as a witness.
While prioritizing an educational approach, Karch highlighted that enforcement measures were implemented when necessary in the past.
With the arrival of warmer weather, municipal enforcement typically receives complaints from residents regarding pet waste odors emanating from neighboring yards. Failure to clean up accumulated waste from the winter season could lead to such nuisances, cautioned Karch.
He concluded by encouraging residents to reach out to municipal enforcement for any inquiries or guidance they may require regarding pet waste management.
