Simmons Pet Food has announced a strategic move aimed at further centralizing production and distribution operations, marking the closure of its canning facility located in Streetsville, Ontario, Canada, by the year’s end.
The decision is expected to affect around 190 team members currently employed at the Streetsville facility. In response, Simmons has emphasized its commitment to aiding impacted staff during this transitional phase. The company plans to provide comprehensive support packages, encompassing separation pay and access to career counseling services to facilitate the transition into new employment opportunities.
Scott Salmon, President of Simmons Pet Food, highlighted the rationale behind the strategic shift, stating, “Over the last three years, Simmons Pet Food has made significant investments in expanding capacity and capabilities in Emporia, Kansas, and Dubuque, Iowa, as part of our efforts to bolster and advance our business.” He added, “This decision aligns with our strategic plan to position Simmons Pet Food as the foremost industry partner.”
Acknowledging the significance of the Streetsville facility in the company’s history, Salmon expressed gratitude for the dedication and hard work of all team members, affirming Simmons’ unwavering support throughout the transition period.
The centralization of operations is expected to enable Simmons Pet Food to capitalize on advancements in optimized production processes, packaging automation, and the establishment of new distribution center locations, thereby enhancing customer service. Recent additions of two distribution centers in Edgerton, Kansas, and Dubuque, Iowa, will complement the primary canning facilities located in Emporia, Kansas, and Dubuque, Iowa.
