American Airlines has announced a significant update to its pet policy, offering a welcome change for animal-loving travelers. The airline now permits passengers traveling with their furry companions to bring a full-size carry-on bag alongside their pet carrier.
According to American Airlines’ website, travelers can now bring one pet carrier as a carry-on, provided they pay the required pet fee. The pet must remain in the carrier under the seat for the duration of the flight. Additionally, passengers are allowed to bring one additional item onboard, such as a purse, small handbag, or a carry-on bag that fits overhead bin requirements. It’s worth noting that only one of these items can accompany the pet carrier.
Previously, travelers with pets were restricted to a small personal item that could fit under the seat if they brought their pets onboard. Larger items, such as carry-on bags, were subject to a $35 checked bag fee. Alternatively, pet owners had the option to stow their pets in the cargo hold if they wished to bring larger items onboard.
Despite this policy change, the fee for bringing a pet onboard remains unchanged at $150, as outlined on the American Airlines website. Additionally, pet strollers are still required to be checked, and standard checked bag fees apply.
American Airlines has not provided immediate comment on the rationale behind the policy update.
