The Lost Dogs’ Home has observed a concerning rise in pet surrenders over the past three years, largely attributed to the challenges renters face in securing accommodation that accommodates their furry companions.
Despite legislative changes enacted in 2020 to grant tenants the right to keep pets, data reveals a notable surge of over 47 percent in the number of pets surrendered under the category of ‘moving/no pets allowed,’ escalating from 106 to 156 cases within the timeframe.
The shelter underscores that this figure may only represent a portion of the true extent of housing-related pet surrenders across the state, as individuals often resort to private rehoming or delivering animals to smaller rescues.
Commenting on the trend, the shelter points to the escalating cost of living and the increasingly competitive rental market as pivotal factors. They emphasize that landlords, given the current climate, wield greater discretion in selecting tenants, potentially placing pet owners at a disadvantage in their search for suitable accommodation.

In response to the mounting pressure, The Lost Dogs’ Home has launched its innovative Home Together program, a pioneering initiative in Australian shelter practices. The program, overseen by a dedicated Pet and Family Advocate, aims to support pet owners facing financial crisis, facilitating their ability to retain their pets through tailored assistance and resources.
The shelter asserts its optimism that this proactive measure will safeguard numerous pets from separation from their families.
