In a proactive move to enhance community safety, the police in western Japan’s Ehime Prefecture have initiated a unique program, appointing pet dogs and their owners to undertake safety patrols. The police station, responsible for overseeing the cities of Matsuyama and Toon, enlisted the assistance of 41 dogs and 34 owners, forming six dedicated teams, who participated in a ceremonial event on Monday.
During the ceremony, the local police chief emphasized the importance of vigilance, urging participants to promptly report any accidents or suspicious activities observed during their patrols or daily activities such as walking or shopping.
Expressing his commitment to the initiative, one of the pet owners highlighted his intent to remain vigilant for potential car accidents, particularly during twilight hours, a time when high-school students on bicycles might be overlooked by drivers.
Additionally, a police officer underscored the significance of these patrols in addressing blind spots not covered by conventional security cameras, emphasizing the crucial role that the canine patrols and their handlers can play in enhancing overall community safety.
