Mornington Peninsula Shire is in the process of sending out reminders to pet owners who have yet to renew their animal’s registration, which was due by April 10th.
Pet registration has been a longstanding responsibility for owners, with dog registration introduced in 1970, followed by cat registration in 1994. Failure to register pets can result in a fine of $385.00, a figure subject to annual adjustments by the State Government.
The fees collected from pet registrations directly fund various services provided by Mornington Peninsula Shire to support pet owners. These services include:
Off-leash dog areas situated across the Shire, allowing residents to train, exercise, and engage in recreational activities with their canine companions.
Operation of the Community Animal Shelter and Pound, which plays a crucial role in caring for lost pets and facilitating adoptions for unclaimed cats and dogs.
Deployment of Community Safety Officers and Rangers to address dog-related incidents such as attacks and nuisance complaints, while also working to minimize the presence of wandering dogs in local communities.
Contribution towards community education initiatives on responsible pet ownership through the State Government Levy.
Additionally, registering and microchipping dogs and cats significantly increases the likelihood of swift and safe reunions with their families in case they become lost or stray.
Mornington Peninsula Shire emphasizes the importance of pet registration not only as a legal requirement but also as a means of supporting vital services and ensuring the well-being of pets and the community at large.
