Ryan Haste, a native of Arcadia in north-west Sydney, was immersed in the world of animals from a young age on his family’s property. With a deep-rooted passion for veterinary science, Ryan’s journey from his rural upbringing to becoming a veterinarian in Newcastle reflects dedication and perseverance.
Graduating from Charles Sturt University with a Bachelor of Veterinary Biology/Bachelor of Veterinary Science in 2024, Ryan’s career trajectory embodies his early aspirations. Reflecting on his childhood, Ryan reminisces, “Becoming a vet was something I couldn’t see myself not doing.” His mother’s influence, a practicing veterinarian specializing in equine care, significantly shaped his career choice.
Despite his unwavering determination, Ryan’s path to veterinary school encountered obstacles. Initially unsuccessful in his application, he pursued a Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science for a year. This detour not only broadened his knowledge base but also introduced him to valuable connections and experiences that would later enrich his veterinary journey.
Wagga Wagga, where Ryan pursued his double degrees, became more than just an academic destination; it became his home for over six years. Embracing the vibrant community and opportunities for social and athletic engagement, Ryan fondly recalls the lasting friendships forged during his time in the regional town.
Transitioning into professional life, Ryan found himself practicing at a small animal general practice in Newcastle, embracing the coastal lifestyle. However, it was his encounters at a local café that sparked his interest in pet nutrition. Conversations about canine dietary issues ignited Ryan’s entrepreneurial spirit, leading to the inception of Pet Pantry—a venture dedicated to crafting high-quality, locally sourced pet food.
While his university education didn’t initially emphasize nutrition, Ryan’s clinical experiences shed light on the significant impact diet plays in animal health. Motivated by the deficiencies in Australia’s pet food regulations and the potential to improve animal welfare, Ryan is committed to driving positive change within the industry through Pet Pantry.
Looking ahead, Ryan remains open to diverse opportunities within veterinary medicine. Whether delving into emergency medicine, pursuing specialization, or embarking on a residency, he approaches the future with a spirit of exploration and growth.
Reflecting on his journey, Ryan offers sage advice to aspiring veterinarians: “Find something you love doing and do that every day—don’t settle for unhappiness.” His story serves as a testament to the transformative power of passion and persistence in achieving one’s dreams.
