Shena Fairless, the dedicated owner of Pudz Animal Sanctuary in South Killingholme, embarked on a courageous endeavor in Grimsby town center last Friday. With the aim of collecting £5,000 to cover her beloved cat Mika’s substantial veterinary expenses, Shena underwent a head shave.
Mika, a rescue cat under Shena’s care since last year, faced a challenging medical journey after breaking his leg in an accident. Despite undergoing surgery to implant pins and plates, Mika’s leg recently began swelling and deviating from its natural position. Further veterinary consultations confirmed a fractured wrist, necessitating another critical procedure estimated at £5,000, involving arthrodesis (wrist fusion).
Determined to provide Mika with the best chance at a healthy and fulfilling life, Shena initiated an online fundraiser, recognizing the urgency of the situation. Expressing her motivation, Shena disclosed to Grimsby Live, “Mika is a kitten that I rescued last year… I was quite shocked at how much the operation will cost. It’s going to be around £5,000, so that’s why I thought I’d do something a bit out there and drastic to try and raise the money a bit quicker.”
Describing Mika’s resilient spirit and gentle nature, Shena highlighted his deservingness of a chance to heal fully. With a deadline set for Tuesday, May 7, Shena hopes to secure the necessary funds, emphasizing the significance of timely intervention for Mika’s well-being.
Reflecting on the urgency of the situation, Shena expressed her dilemma, stating, “I’ve put the date back once already, but if I haven’t raised the money by Tuesday I’ll have to put the date back again.”
Shena’s commitment to Mika’s welfare underscores the profound bond between humans and their animal companions, resonating deeply within the community as efforts rally to support this noble cause.
