This announcement, made on Monday, underscores the need for vigilance as two distinct groups of periodic cicadas are set to surface simultaneously, marking a natural phenomenon not witnessed in over two centuries in Illinois.
The impending emergence, slated for late May or early June, is expected to bring billions of cicadas into the state, prompting officials to advise on protective measures for pets. Despite cicadas being non-aggressive insects that neither bite nor sting, nor pose any toxicity or disease threat to animals, their size, noise, and movements may elicit fear responses in some pets.
“Interactions with cicadas are generally safe, but their presence may startle certain pets,” stated officials. They recommended guiding frightened animals to quieter indoor spaces for relaxation and emphasized the importance of keeping dogs leashed outdoors to prevent potential escape attempts in response to cicada-induced fright.
Furthermore, pet owners are advised to monitor their pets’ consumption of cicadas, which may be viewed as a delectable treat by some animals. Allen Lawrence, associate curator of entomology at the Petty Notebaert Nature Museum, highlighted the nutritional value of cicadas, noting their appeal as a substantial meal for various creatures.
However, despite cicadas’ non-toxic nature, pet owners are cautioned about potential gastrointestinal issues resulting from excessive consumption. While cicadas themselves pose no toxicity risks, complications such as gastrointestinal upset or obstruction may arise, particularly if pets ingest a large quantity of cicadas or their exoskeletons within a short timeframe.
Symptoms of concern include vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, or excessive drooling, warranting prompt veterinary attention.
