In an era marked by the exodus of manufacturers from small towns, Taumarunui stands out as an exception, experiencing a revival propelled by the full-time operation of a pet food factory. Once plagued by the closure of its meatworks twenty-five years ago, which dealt a devastating blow to its local economy, the town now finds hope in the transformation of the former site into King Country Pet Food, following a $90 million upgrade and three years of extensive refurbishment.
Under the stewardship of Gareth Stillman, the general manager of commercial operations at King Country Pet Food, approximately 60 employees currently contribute to the operations spread across the 4.76-hectare facility, with expectations for the workforce to double in the near future. Utilizing locally sourced New Zealand ingredients, the plant manufactures dry pet food for a variety of brands distributed both domestically and internationally, catering to the dietary needs of pets worldwide.
Despite its seemingly unconventional choice of location, Taumarunui boasts strategic advantages, including its central geographic position and proximity to raw material sources. According to Stillman, these factors, coupled with the existing infrastructure from the former meatworks, make Taumarunui a viable hub for pet food production.
Owned by the Chinese conglomerate Peidi Corporation, King Country Pet Food is poised to capitalize on the burgeoning global demand for pet nutrition. Stillman emphasizes the long-term commitment of the corporation to the Taumarunui site, providing stability and employment opportunities for the local community.
The factory’s presence has not only attracted new residents like Stillman but has also provided a secure livelihood for individuals like Shayla McCormick, who previously relied on seasonal employment. McCormick’s pursuit of a diploma in health and safety underscores the newfound educational opportunities afforded by the factory’s establishment in the region.
Mayor Weston Kirton acknowledges the transformative impact of the factory on Taumarunui’s economy, reminiscent of the town’s former glory before the closure of its freezing works in 1999. With the creation of 120 jobs and the infusion of economic activity, the factory symbolizes a resurgence for the town, offering hope for its future prosperity.
While navigating challenges such as labor shortages and operational constraints in a town with a population of just 5000, King Country Pet Food remains steadfast in its commitment to Taumarunui’s growth trajectory. Plans for expansion, including the introduction of a second shift and increased production capacity, signal a promising outlook for both the factory and the town it calls home.
