In a heartwarming tale of resilience and care, a Husky named Qiqi embarked on a journey from Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport in south China’s Guangdong Province to Shijiazhuang City in the country’s north, following a 20-hour stint in the airport’s pet waiting lounge due to a flight cancellation over the weekend.
Amidst the extended wait, Qiqi experienced a blend of hospitality and technological connectivity, courtesy of the airport staff. Not only was the canine companion tended to with meals and playtime in a dedicated area, but also facilitated virtual reunions with its owner, surnamed Zhang, through video calls. The compassionate approach ensured Qiqi’s calm demeanor throughout the delay, with swift arrangements made for its subsequent journey.
This pioneering pet care initiative took flight last week with the inauguration of a dedicated waiting lounge tailored exclusively for pets, marking a milestone as China’s first of its kind. Since its inception, the facility has catered to the needs of over 40 pets, reflecting the growing significance of pet-related services in Shenzhen’s evolving landscape.
Shenzhen’s burgeoning pet ownership culture, particularly among the post-1980 demographic, underscores the rising demand for specialized amenities. According to research by the Shenzhen-based think tank, China Development Institute, the city is home to over 500,000 pet cats and dogs, amplifying the necessity for tailored services.
Previously, pets transiting through Bao’an airport shared space with cargo, with minimal provisions for their comfort. Although a pet waiting area was established in 2018, it remained within a conventional cargo terminal, as highlighted by Liu Shaobin, an airport official.
The newly unveiled pet waiting lounge spans an area of approximately 210 square meters, boasting ambient lighting and sustainable materials. Segregated zones for cats and dogs offer tailored amenities, including designated waiting areas and entertainment facilities.
Operated by a renowned pet technology company, the lounge is staffed by proficient specialists and outfitted with cutting-edge infrastructure. A comprehensive surveillance system ensures round-the-clock monitoring, encompassing temperature, humidity, and air quality metrics.
In addition to streamlined security procedures and personalized care, the lounge extends remote medical assistance and temporary foster services at no extra cost. This holistic approach alleviates the stress of unexpected delays or cancellations, as exemplified by Qiqi’s seamless journey.
Following a brief flight, Qiqi safely reunited with Zhang’s family in Shijiazhuang on the evening of May 11. Expressing gratitude for the exemplary care afforded to her cherished companion, Zhang articulated her peace of mind amidst international travel, knowing that Qiqi’s welfare was in capable hands.
