The challenge of securing apartment rentals has intensified, particularly for pet owners, in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
While some landlords are amenable to accommodating pets with additional deposits and rent, others remain wary due to potential damages inflicted by animals.
Property manager Dave Fleming from Carlisle shed light on the issue, stating, “I have landlords whose properties have essentially been rendered uninhabitable, necessitating thousands of dollars in renovations.”
This predicament has led to fewer options and additional pet-related fees for those seeking rentals in Central PA.
Fleming elaborated on the situation, highlighting landlords’ cautious stance, stating, “Landlords in this area are currently in a position where they can afford to be discerning. Comparatively, tenants without pets present less liability than those with pets.”
Consequently, this dilemma may compel many pet owners to face heart-wrenching decisions.
Kristen Dempwolf, the Communications Director of the York County SPCA, expressed concern over the recent surge in evictions and subsequent owner surrenders. She remarked, “We’ve observed a significant increase in owner surrender applications from members of our community, citing economic hardship and encountering breed restrictions in potential housing options.”
In the face of these challenges, animal shelters and organizations continue their relentless efforts to support individuals impacted by these restrictive rental policies.
