The spirit of a cherished canine companion named Katie echoed through the halls of Baywater Animal Rescue in Cambridge on May 8th, as low-income pet owners were offered a no-cost vaccination clinic, courtesy of a generous donation from a native of Cambridge now residing in Tennessee.
Katie, who crossed the Rainbow Bridge in May 2021, continues to live on in the heart of her owner, Sandy Hooper. Seeking to honor Katie’s memory in a meaningful way, Hooper found the perfect tribute in her hometown.
Despite her lifelong love for dogs, Hooper was unaware of the local animal rescue facility during her upbringing in Cambridge. However, upon discovering it later in life, she became a dedicated supporter.
Hooper, who spent most of her adult life in New York City working for the Disney Company, made a conscious decision to adopt shelter animals after her previous pets passed away. She found Katie through Petfinders website and brought her home to New York from Arkansas.
After relocating to Tennessee to be closer to her family, Hooper was determined to honor Katie’s memory in a significant manner. Upon learning about Baywater’s Capital Campaign, aimed at raising funds to support the shelter’s operations, Hooper decided to make a substantial contribution, resulting in the establishment of the Katie Hooper Pet Care Center.
Carly Stockus, the Executive Director of Baywater Animal Rescue, praised Hooper’s long-standing support for the organization, highlighting her pivotal role in the development of the pet care center. Stockus also emphasized Hooper’s generosity in funding the recent vaccination clinic, which provided essential services to low-income families in Dorchester County.
The clinic, which offered free examinations, vaccinations, and other preventative treatments, served a total of 23 animals. Dr. Olivia Holden and Veterinary Technician Jillian Casey from Midshore Veterinary Services conducted the examinations, ensuring that pets received essential care, including testing for heartworm and Lyme disease.
Stockus noted that Hooper’s donation covered the costs of procedures for several animals, including spaying and neutering. Additionally, attendees received goody bags filled with treats, pet food, and other supplies, contributing to a memorable and rewarding experience for all involved.
While the Katie Hooper Pet Care Center is currently being utilized to care for Baywater rescues, plans are underway to obtain the necessary licensing to open it to the public. Stockus outlined the steps involved in the licensing process, highlighting the organization’s commitment to providing accessible veterinary services to the community.
During the clinic, Hooper had the opportunity to engage with pet owners and their furry companions, further cementing her dedication to honoring Katie’s memory through acts of kindness. Reflecting on her visit to Cambridge, Hooper expressed gratitude for the opportunity to reconnect with her roots and pay tribute to her loved ones.
