Stanislaus Animal Services Agency (SASA) is gearing up to participate in the inaugural California Adopt-a-Pet Day, a groundbreaking statewide initiative set to take place on June 1. With over 170 animal welfare organizations across California involved, this event aims to facilitate free adoptions at shelters and within communities.
Expressing enthusiasm for the forthcoming event, Vaughn Maurice, Executive Director of SASA, remarked, “We are thrilled to participate in the inaugural California Adopt-a-Pet Day. We eagerly anticipate collaborating with our community to find loving homes for our pets and to raise awareness about the critical issue of overcrowded animal shelters. This promises to be a memorable day for everyone involved.”
The surge in animal intake at shelters is attributed to various factors, including a nationwide shortage of veterinary professionals, inflation, and restrictions on pet-friendly housing. Access to affordable veterinary care, notably spay and neuter services, remains a challenge in many California communities.
Organized by CalAnimals, California Adopt-a-Pet Day seeks to bolster the efforts of animal welfare and sheltering organizations across the state in their commitment to animal care and community welfare. This initiative garners support from esteemed organizations such as the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SF SPCA) and the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).
With a collective aim to find loving homes for 2,024 shelter pets statewide on June 1, participating shelters, including SASA, will waive adoption fees, courtesy of the ASPCA. This endeavor aims to simplify the process of welcoming a new furry companion into households.
Currently, SASA boasts an inventory of over 230 dogs and 150 cats awaiting adoption, underscoring the significance of community involvement in providing these animals with loving homes.
