Kelowna’s South Pandosy neighborhood welcomes a new addition to its community services with the recent opening of Southside Pet Hospital earlier this month. Dr. Charlie Sulko, the sole veterinarian and proprietor, expressed enthusiasm for the venture, emphasizing that they are just beginning to establish their presence.
In an effort to attract clientele, the hospital has launched a promotional campaign, offering a generous 20% discount on services until the end of May. Dr. Sulko affirmed the hospital’s competitive edge, stating, “I think we’re pretty competitive, to be honest. We’re just promoting the month of May.”
Distinguishing itself from corporate-owned veterinary practices, Southside Pet Hospital prides itself on its independent ownership structure. Dr. Sulko highlighted his desire for autonomy in decision-making, opting to manage all aspects of the practice without intervention from umbrella corporations. “A lot of times there is pressure when you work with those big companies to do certain things their way, right? I like to practice the way I’ve been taught,” Dr. Sulko explained.
Reflecting on industry trends, Dr. Sulko noted a shift in ownership dynamics, particularly during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. While corporate-owned clinics experienced a surge in popularity, he believes the trend may be waning. “I think there was a wave, like when COVID hit, those companies became popular. I think it’s not as bad right now. I can’t say if there is a rise, but I would say probably most of the clinics are owned by those companies,” Dr. Sulko remarked.
