Woods Humane Society and SLO County Animal Services are joining forces to participate in the statewide Adopt-a-Pet Day event, scheduled for June 1st.
Organized by The California Animal Welfare Association, the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty, this annual adoption day will see more than 150 shelters across California waiving adoption fees.
The ASPCA is generously providing funds to cover adoption costs at participating shelters, including Woods Humane Society and SLO County Animal Services. The primary objective is to facilitate the adoption of pets into loving forever homes, thereby alleviating the strain of overcrowded shelters statewide.
In a press release, CalAnimals underscored the significant rise in shelter admissions, attributing it to a combination of factors such as a shortage of veterinary professionals nationwide, inflation, and constraints on pet-friendly housing options.
Jill Tucker, CEO of CalAnimals, expressed optimism about the event, stating, “There has never been a better time or better selection of incredible animals ready for new homes, and we know the people of California will rise to this challenge.”
For those interested in participating in the event, Woods Humane Society will be open from 12 to 4 p.m., while SLO County Animal Services will welcome visitors from 1 to 5 p.m.
Emily L’Heureux, CEO of Woods Humane Society, conveyed excitement and gratitude about their involvement, stating, “With 243 dogs and cats currently in our care, and hundreds more waiting to come in, Woods Humane Society is excited and grateful to participate.”
Woods Humane Society has two locations: 875 Oklahoma Ave. in San Luis Obispo and 2300 Ramona Rd. in Atascadero. The County of SLO Animal Services Division is situated at 865 Oklahoma Ave. in San Luis Obispo.
Dr. Eric Anderson, DVM, Animal Services Manager at SLO County Animal Services Division, emphasized the collaborative effort of the event, stating, “This event allows Animal Services and Woods Humane Society to work together to get great pets into great new homes.”
