The 2022 population and pet census in Ecuador has unveiled significant opportunities for the pet food industry, providing critical insights into market dynamics and future potential.
With a population of 17 million, Ecuador’s demographic is predominantly adults aged 30 to 64 years (39.7%), while young people aged 18 to 29 years constitute only 20.3% of the total. This demographic shift from a younger population in the 2001 census influences the country’s pet ownership trends significantly.
More Pets Than Expected
Contrary to industry expectations, the census revealed a higher number of pets. Ecuador is home to 7.6 million dogs and cats, including 5.2 million dogs and 2.4 million cats.
This data is essential for understanding the current market landscape and identifying growth opportunities. Most pet-owning households in Ecuador are nuclear families, with a smaller proportion being single-person households. This trend helps explain who makes pet food purchasing decisions and the types of products these households are likely to buy.
Market Poised for Growth
The data suggests Ecuador’s pet food market is on the cusp of substantial growth. It is projected that the market will exceed 300,000 metric tons of dog and cat food by 2024. This projection reflects the rising demand for pet food, driven by increasing pet ownership and evolving household demographics.
Expansion of Local Infrastructure
Ecuador is not reliant on pet food imports. In response to the growing demand, local companies are expanding their production capacities. Pronaca, a leading local company, plans to complete a USD $25 million plant expansion by the end of 2024. This expansion will boost the company’s production capacity by 25%, solidifying its position as the second-largest pet food producer in the country.
With a significant portion of the population consisting of pet-owning nuclear families and a market projected for substantial growth, Ecuador’s pet food industry is poised for a promising future. Local companies like Pronaca are already making strategic investments to meet increasing demand, signaling robust market expansion in the coming years.
