Authorities have taken custody of a dog believed to be of a prohibited breed following a tragic incident at a country park in Derbyshire, where one pet was fatally attacked.
On Tuesday, law enforcement officials executed a warrant in the Shirebrook area under section 5 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, seizing the dog in question. The action follows an altercation at Pleasley Pit, where one dog inflicted fatal injuries on another.
The seized animal will undergo evaluation by specialists to determine its breed, as it is suspected to fall under the category of banned breeds. The investigation by the Shirebrook Safer Neighbourhood Team remains ongoing.
In a statement, the team acknowledged, “The dog will now be assessed by dog experts to determine the breed of the dog as it is a suspected banned breed. Our investigations are ongoing. We would like to thank our Dog Section and dog warden for their assistance.”
Under the provisions of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, ownership of breeds including the pit bull terrier, Japanese tosa, dogo Argentino, fila Braziliero, and XL bully breeds is prohibited, according to guidance from the RSPCA.
