Andrea Harris and her husband, Michael, understand that for many, pets are more than just animals—they are cherished members of the family. As vice president of Pet Passages, Andrea reflects on her husband’s deep commitment to their pets, joking that he might one day love her as much as their dog.
Founded by Michael Harris in 2009, Pet Passages emerged from his personal journey of grieving the loss of his beloved dogs. As a funeral director familiar with human memorial services, Harris noticed a gap in the market for dignified end-of-life care for pets. Determined to provide grieving pet owners with a comforting and respectful experience akin to human funerals, he established Pet Passages.
Initially facing challenges in marketing a service that many only consider when facing the end of a pet’s life, Pet Passages found its footing through strategic partnerships and a strong online presence. Despite early setbacks in securing partnerships with veterinarians, the brand’s commitment to quality and compassion drove organic growth. Today, Pet Passages operates 21 units across 12 states, offering services that include cremation and bereavement support in tranquil “rainbow bridge rooms.”
The brand’s franchise model, launched in 2016, has seen steady expansion, with franchisees typically seeing a return on investment within 18 months. Units require an investment ranging from $45,500 to $418,000, catering to individuals seeking a meaningful career change or inspired by personal experiences with pet loss.
Recently, Pet Passages secured an exclusive contract with Vertical Vets, an organization linking over 2,200 independent veterinarians nationwide. This partnership aims to expand Pet Passages’ reach and offer in-home euthanasia services, providing a gentler alternative to traditional vet visits. Despite the logistical challenges of servicing such a vast network, the alliance promises significant business opportunities for Pet Passages.
For Andrea Harris, the mission is deeply personal and driven by a desire to ensure every pet and their family receives compassionate care during a difficult time. Reflecting on the shared experiences of franchisees, she notes their common motivations: a passion for animal welfare and a commitment to honoring pets’ legacies with dignity.
In a testament to their dedication, Pet Passages continues to grow, guided by a vision of providing pet owners with peace of mind and a respectful farewell for their cherished companions.
