Nationwide Insurance announced on Monday that it will discontinue pet insurance policies for approximately 100,000 animals, citing escalating veterinary costs and other contributing factors.
This decision places tens of thousands of pet owners in a difficult position, especially since many of the affected pets are older and have pre-existing conditions, making it unlikely for them to secure new coverage elsewhere.
The company clarified that the cancellations were not related to the pets’ ages or claims histories. Reports from USA Today suggest that the cancellations might be influenced by the geographical location of the policyholders.
In a letter to one policyholder, Nationwide indicated that the specific type of policy in question would no longer be offered in their state.
In response, some customers are attempting to organize and explore potential legal actions against the company.
