BC Ferries has announced the introduction of outdoor pet areas on its vessels along the busiest routes, just in time for the Canada Day long weekend. These spaces will accommodate leashed dogs and cats in carriers on the upper decks of the Spirit of British Columbia and the Spirit of Vancouver Island, with similar additions planned for the Coastal Celebration and the Queen of New Westminster by the end of June.
“We’ve been preparing our vessels and crew for what promises to be one of our busiest summers yet. These new pet areas mean extra comfort for canine and feline friends and family members – and their people – through the peak season and beyond,” stated Melanie Lucia of BC Ferries in a media release on Tuesday.
The expansion aims to enhance the travel experience for pet owners, offering them the option to stay outside with their animals rather than remaining on the lower car decks. Customer surveys have shown significant support for these designated areas, which are equipped with dedicated stairwell or elevator access, waste bags, and water bowls. Regular cleaning will also be provided to maintain hygiene.
It’s important to note that these pet areas are exclusively for dogs and cats; other pets are not permitted.
