Essex County Fire and Rescue Service has begun carrying pet-friendly oxygen masks on their fire engines to better assist in saving pets during emergencies.
These specialized masks are designed to deliver 85-90% oxygen to animals, a significant improvement over the mere 15% that human masks could provide.
Operational group trainer Paul Jones highlighted that the increased availability of these pet-friendly masks would have a substantial impact.
Purchased from the non-profit organization Smokey Paws, these new masks are conically shaped to fit over the snout of animals, ensuring a better fit and more effective oxygen delivery.
“Firefighters often face a variety of incidents, and while makeshift systems for providing oxygen to animals have been used in the past, the Smokey Paws equipment enables our crews to deliver evidence-based trauma care, enhancing our service to the community,” said Jones.
