In a move aimed at facilitating quicker reunions between lost pets and their owners, all three fire stations in Cocoa have been outfitted with specialized “microchip” scanners, announced the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
Individuals who discover stray dogs or cats now have the option to bring them directly to any of the Cocoa fire stations. Here, trained department personnel can utilize the scanners to promptly identify the animals’ owners without the delay of transporting them to a veterinary clinic or shelter.
Susan Naylor, speaking on behalf of the SPCA of Brevard, highlighted the effectiveness of the new initiative. “I know that within two hours of receiving their scanner, one station had a lost pet brought in,” she explained. “They performed a scan, identified the chip, and successfully reunited the pet with its owners.”
The acquisition of these scanners was made possible through a donation by Tails of the Barkery in Cocoa. Prior to this initiative, similar scanners had already been deployed at the Titusville Fire Department and other stations across Brevard County.
Looking ahead, the SPCA of Brevard aims to expand this program to include every fire station in the county, ensuring comprehensive coverage to aid in reuniting lost pets with their families.
