According to the 2024 pet population report from the Belgian Association of Pet Food Manufacturers (BEPEFA), price remains the primary factor for Belgian pet owners when selecting pet food.
A survey conducted by iVOX in April 2024 highlighted that the top three considerations for purchasing pet food are price (49%), food tailored to the pet’s life stage (45%), and food that their pets find tasty (40%).
The report revealed that 58% of Belgian households now have one or more pets, marking a 6% increase since 2021. The average number of pets per household remains steady at around three, with the 2024 average at three pets per household, closely matching the 2021 average of 3.1.
Additionally, BEPEFA’s report noted that 17% of Belgians welcomed a new pet in the past year, with companionship cited as the primary reason for 55% of respondents. For 31% of these households, this was their first pet.
The demographic breakdown showed that pet owners aged between 35 and 54 constitute 69% of the total pet-owning population in Belgium, followed by those under 34 at 66%, and those over 55 at 56%. Notably, one in eight working pet owners (12%) can bring their pet to work, and 9% of dog and cat owners bring their pets to work some or all of the time.
