Microchipping your pet offers multiple benefits, including storing your contact and address information, which any veterinarian can access via a scan. The procedure is quick and straightforward.
“It’s similar to getting a shot. A needle is inserted between the pet’s shoulder blades, and it’s over in seconds, causing only brief discomfort,” explains Kayleigh Murdock, public information officer at the Pima Animal Care Center in Tucson, Arizona.
However, new CDC guidelines, effective August 1st, mandate microchipping for dogs traveling out of the country. These rules include:
- Ensuring your pet appears healthy upon arrival
- Your pet must be at least six months old
- The pet must be microchipped
- Submission of a CDC “Dog Import Form” with an online receipt
These guidelines apply exclusively to dogs entering the United States, meaning you could potentially leave with your dog but face difficulties reentering the U.S.
“We see many pets coming in because owners can’t access affordable and preventative vet care. We aim to ensure pets in the community have the necessary vaccines and resources to stay safe,” says Murdock.
