MONTOUR FALLS, N.Y. (WENY) – Pet shelters across the nation are grappling with capacity challenges as thousands of animals await adoption. To alleviate this strain, an upcoming adoption drive is set to support shelters, including several in our region.
The Bissell Pet Foundation is collaborating with multiple animal shelters in New York State to help find homes for pets. One such shelter is the Humane Society of Schuyler County.
“We’re delighted to be one of over 350 shelters nationwide participating in this event,” said Georgie Taylor, executive director. “The Bissell Pet Foundation Empty the Shelters event raises awareness about the importance of adoption and brings people to the shelter who might not have considered adoption before.”
Empty the Shelters, a national initiative aimed at reducing pet homelessness, will take place from July 8th to the 31st. The focus will be on adopting both cats and dogs, with adoption fees capped at $50. All pets available for adoption are fully vaccinated, microchipped, and either spayed or neutered.
“The human-animal bond is incredibly strong. Pets bring us immense love and companionship, especially for elderly individuals who may be housebound or for children learning about adoption and responsibility,” added Taylor.
The Humane Society of Schuyler County, located in Montour Falls, is just an hour’s drive from Elmira, Corning, and Ithaca. Other nearby participating shelters include the Broome County Humane Society, the Humane Society of Yates County, Tompkins County SPCA, and Ulster County SPCA.
