NOCO Humane is experiencing an unprecedented rate of adoptions, with numbers exceeding their usual averages.
“Adoptions as of about the start of June have actually been going wonderfully,” said Amanda Myers, spokesperson for NOCO Humane. “As of this afternoon, we’ve seen 475 adoptions in June.”
Despite this success, the shelter is facing an overwhelming influx of animals.
“In all of June, we’ve seen over a thousand animals come into our shelter,” Myers reported.
The math highlights a surplus of animals, making it a challenge to find housing for them. This issue is not unique to NOCO Humane.
“Unfortunately, that’s a trend that we are seeing nationwide, with dogs in particular,” Myers added.
To cope with the rising number of intakes, the shelter has put temporary guidelines in place. They are urging the community to avoid surrendering animals unless absolutely necessary.
For those who must surrender pets, NOCO Humane encourages re-homing them independently through their website. This helps to prevent shelter overcrowding and makes room for homeless pets.
Additionally, the shelter is seeking temporary homes for animals, especially strays.
“If you find a healthy pet and are willing to provide temporary care, we can work to reunite it with its owner without bringing it to the shelter,” Myers explained.
To further promote adoptions, NOCO Humane has waived all adoption fees.
“If an adoption fee has been a barrier for you, now is the time to come out,” Myers urged.
For those who cannot adopt or provide temporary shelter, NOCO Humane welcomes volunteers and financial donations to support their efforts.
