In a first-ever event, Second Avenue Global Methodist Church in Altoona, Pa., welcomed pet owners to an outdoor blessing ceremony last Sunday. A total of 17 pets, comprising 16 dogs and one bunny, participated in the ceremony.
Lead Pastor Brian Sandell expressed the church’s belief in animals as blessings from God, emphasizing their unconditional love and support as integral members of families. “Animals are a definite blessing from God. Their unconditional love and support is truly remarkable,” Sandell remarked.
The event commenced at 3:30 p.m. with pet introductions followed by individual prayers from Pastor Sandell for each animal, seeking strength and well-being for them. Reflecting on the responsibilities of pet ownership, Sandell advised, “Make good common-sense decisions and be prepared for the responsibility that comes with owning a pet.”
Due to the positive reception, the church plans to host another pet blessing event in the upcoming fall or next spring, further emphasizing their commitment to celebrating and blessing pets within their community.
