The Lafayette Animal Shelter & Care Center is joining over 390 shelters across 44 states in a significant effort to promote pet adoption. Organized by the BISSELL Pet Foundation, a leading advocate for ending pet homelessness, the “Empty the Shelters” event will run from July 8 to July 31, offering reduced-fee adoptions.
Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation, highlighted the urgent need for adoption amid various challenges faced by shelters nationwide, including natural disasters and overcrowding. “Shelters are facing critical situations, from evacuations due to wildfires and tornadoes to overcrowding necessitating difficult decisions,” Bissell stated.
Located at 410 N Dugas Road, the Lafayette Animal Shelter & Care Center will waive adoption fees for all dogs and cats during the event. Each animal is vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed or neutered, ensuring they are ready for their new homes.
The “Empty the Shelters” initiative aims to save lives and alleviate overcrowding, encouraging communities to consider adoption. Bissell emphasized, “Every adoption is a lifeline for a pet in need and creates space for another to be rescued. Whether through adoption or fostering, everyone can play a role in saving lives.”
Started in 2016, this national adoption drive is the largest of its kind, promoting adoption awareness and providing support to shelters across the country. Potential adopters are encouraged to research their chosen pet and adoption requirements beforehand.
The Lafayette Animal Shelter and Care Center operates Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., welcoming prospective adopters to visit and make a difference in the lives of shelter animals.
